1-in-7 chance of a Medical Mishap!

I have written before about what dangerous places hospitals are and have quoted statistics from the US. Now, in New Zealand we have some of our own and they are not good, although they are apparently quite a bit better than Australia,

According to a report issued by the New Zealand Ministry of Health you have a 1 in 7 chance of experiencing some form of a medical mishap if you become a patient in a New Zealand hospital.

These ‘mishaps’ may be quite minor such as staff forgetting to give you a pill with your lunch, or as serious as having the wrong leg cut off…

The report has generated a great deal of debate in the medical community with some saying that the problem is not as serious as claimed whilst others saying that it is much worse. It is not for me to speculate as to whom is right but rather reinforces that hospitals are places that you should try to avoid at all costs.

In other words really make all possible efforts to ensure that you educate yourself as much as possible as to what you need to do in order to avoid getting ill and ending up in hospital. I know that this is easier said than done for most people, but everyone should make an effort to do so.

One simple hint that will reduce your risks of ending up in hospital is being more aware of not so much what you should eat but what you shouldn’t eat…such as baked goods, processed foods and anything out of a packet. Replace these with fresh fruits and vegetables. That would be a good start.

Will the situation improve in the hospitals? I doubt it! In fact, I think that it will get worse as the health of all the western world continues to deteriorate largely.

Much banging on a drum. Certainly, there are risks in being hospitalised but, in general, the health service in NZ is of very high and consistent quality.

I have more than a sneaking feeling that this is a quasi attempt to wring more dollars for "health" from a government, in an election year.

Quite simply, as bang for the buck, we get excellent service from our hospitals and from our GPs. It is not quite as up-to-date as in the USA perhaps, but even there the best service is almost totally reserved for those who can pay. In California, the indigent get excellent service - almost completely free. They, like NZ, may not get the latest options but when it is for trauma or similar surgery, it is paid for by the State. It is the middle-class that suffers, unable to afford the health insurance levels of the wealthy but not counted as indigent and therefore have to pay for everything.

If anyone has to go to hospital here, you will be well looked after - but as in everything else you have to take responsibility for yourself. YOU check and re-check that prescription, and make sure that you get the pills. Oh, yes, if they're taking off one leg, get a black felt tip and write on the other (remaining one) ... IT"S THE OTHER LEG!

Well, i think the UK NHS is much worse i imagine!

I'm 23 years old and wanted to use Genf20 at www.genf20.com It is a HGH product and heard many feedback about it...

Since i was skiny i wanted to build some muscle and bone density and strenght, can i use that product with total balance?

I have used last year for one month only and it gave me a relief of my chronic fatigue with energy and better sleep.

But was afraid to go on it again after reading negative things about amino acids...

Thanks for the help!

Hi Alex,

Yes, I have seen data which suggests that the UK NHS is indeed worse than what we have in NZ. As Muzz says we actually have a pretty good system here in NZ and health care is available to everyone irrespective of their circumstances.

Nonetheless the staff are human and make mistakes which is why you should try and not be a 'victim' in anyone's hospital.

With regard to Genf20 I am surprised that these people are still in business. Their website is so misleading it is criminal. They are comparing apples with oranges. Much of what they say can easily be discredited.

However, having said that I am sure their product will not do you any harm as it is simply a grossly overpriced amino acid supplement and has nothing to to do with HGH although some amino acids may help improve the body's production of HGH.

You would raise your HGH more effectively with our Total Balance than this product and into the bargain get a lot more health benefits.

The reason i was interested in that product in the first place is, when i go to the gym and workout, i lose more weight only, as I'm a slim person already i dont want to lose more weight...

Do you know any other better amino acid product out there
which is better than Genf20 and do you know how could build more muscle and not lose just weight by going to the gym?

Thanks Warren!

This is a difficult one Alex. To put on weight you would need to increase the amount of protein that you eat and that may have negative health consequences long term.

However, it may be posible to put on weight fairly rapidily with the help of protein powders and then maintain it by diet.

My suggestion would be to talk to the instructors at your gym and see what they recommend in the way of good quality protein powders. If your gym does not have anything suitable you will probably be able to get something from your local health food shop.

If you end up having high doses of these protein powders or amino acid mixes plan to make it short term. Maybe have a three month program with 3 weeks on and 1 week off.

Thereafter try to maintain your weight through a good diet. If you are naturally slim don't try and bulk up to much. At the end of the day extra muscles are not worth it if you compromise your help in the process...and excessive amounts of protein over an extended time may do that.

If you want a straight amino acid mix to replace Genf20 then you probably be able to find a powdered amino acid mix at your local health food store. Amino acids mix well in water and are easy to mix in a glass and drink.

Good luck

Thanks Warren for the great advice and help!
I'm about 170m and my new weight is 56k which i think is low.

I have lost about 10k when i started to just walk, I'm the kind of person who loses weight naturaly fast when i intend to lose weight, even when I'm on a bad diet.

7 years ago i was almost 80k and no matter how i tried i could not lose weight.

But that has changed now and i can even lose weight without going to the gym and being on any diet.

But if i want gain weight i have to not workout and eat lots of sweets and junk food, but that weight gain will be fat.

What i find most weird is, when set mind to lose weight i will lose weight without any exercise and diet gradualy.

However that ability to lose weight has its disatvantage
for me, example..

I have started to be more fit and started to do kickboxing which is fun and better and more social than the gym and it is also a great way to workout, but i found after a few weeks of just one session a week i lost some kilos of weight.

So i started to think i cant aford to lose more weight, and if i gain any weight i don't want that weight gain to be fat.

Thanks for your time Warren!
