Avendia should remain, advisers say!
This is one of the headlines on Yahoo news today. In case you haven't been kept up to date with this issue, Avendia is a drug given to Type 2 diabetics to help control blood sugar. However, like all drugs it has side effects, some of them alleged to be fatal.
According to information previously released by the FDA there have been dozens of studies which point to an increased risk of heart attack through the use of Avendia. One of the FDA's chief researchers suggested that the risk was so high and the benefits were so small that the continued sale of the drug could not be justified. Outside sources claim that there have been large numbers of fatal heart attacks which have been attributed to this drug.
As a result there has been mounting pressure to have the drug removed from the market.
BUT...a panel of 'experts' appointed to review this drug have now decided that the risks do not warrant the removal of the drug!
Interesting isn't it? The first group of experts say that it should be taken off the market and then the next lot say it is OK! Now, there wouldn't have been any 'arm twisting' by Glaxo would there? No, I am sure they wouldn't try to do anything like that, would they now???
