According to an article in an Oct 2008 issue of ‘Stroke’ researchers at John Hopkins Institute in Baltimore have discovered that gingko biloba when taken in a supplement can offer protective effects.

They believe that is can halve the damage of a stroke and reduce the amount of paralysis and limb weakness.

In their studies they found that mice being fed with this nutrient suffered 50% less neurological dysfunction following a stroke compared to mice that were not give the nutrient.  Additionally the area of the brain that was damaged in these mice was also 50% less than those in the control group.

No surprise really as it has long been believed that gingko along with other nutrients can help reduce the risk of stroke and the seriousness of one if it does occur.  This has always been an influencing factor in the design of our Total Balance.

Hi: I understand about taking a 2 week break every 6 months if one is taking Total Balance Premium, which i am. But what about Cardio-Klenz? And Omega 3? Do I take a break with them also? Thanks

Hello. I was taking gingko biloba until I was facing surgery a couple of years ago. I was told that it thins the blood, much in the way Aspirin does, and that I should stop taking it. That particular hospital had recently lost a patient from severe blood loss. He had apparently been taking copious amounts of gingko biloba.

Hi Rick,

No need to take a break from Omega 3. With regard to Cardio-Klenz if you took a break from that for 2 weeks once a year that would be fine.

Hi Karolyn,

It is always wise to discontinue all supplements before surgery 2 - 3 weeks beforehand.

Gingko does indeed thin the blood which is a positive benefit. However, like all nutrients even good ones like Gingko people tend to overdo it thinking that more is better.

But, more often than not more is not better. With regard to Gingko 50mgs a day of the 25/6 extract is a good safe level. This is what we use in Total Balance. You should never exceed 200mgs a day, although many people do.
