Question: from Abraham

I am suffering from high triglycerides (360 mg). However, my total cholesterol and LDL are normal with HDL figure low (32 mg). Kindly let me know whether your product CHOLEST-NATURAL could help. I would be much grateful if you could give me an early reply so that I can forward the order without delay

Answer: from Warren

HDL levels are not easy to raise! Most customers do however get some benefit from the Cholest-Natural in the form of increased HDL as well as lowered LDL, but it can take 60 – 90 days and the increase in HDL may still only be modest.

It is important though that you are aware that an important component in raising HDL is exercise, in particular weight bearing exercise. It is likely that some good solid exercise will help raise your HDL more than any drug or supplement.

I feel that your main focus should be with reducing your triglycerides which are way too high.

In this regard, although the Cholest-Natural will help, but your best bet in the form of supplements is the Omega 3 fish oil at a double dose of 4 soft gels per day.

BUT…it is important to combine both these supplements with a diet change.

High triglycerides are very much impacted by diet. Much more so than cholesterol!

What causes high triglycerides are simple carbohydrates processed foods and hydrogenated oils. Try to not eat anything out of a packet and substantially increase your intake of fresh salads and vegetables. Use a simple salad dressing such as balsamic vinegar mixed with extra virgin olive oil or flax seed oil. Use grape seed oil for cooking. Avoid bakery goods and minimize your intake of bread. Items such as donuts etc you must totally avoid.

The good news is that high triglycerides are easily beaten because they are so dependent on diet. It is also possible that a change in diet will help raise your HDL as well.

This is what I would do if I were you.

1. Take Cholest-Natural at the standard rate of 2 soft gels per day for three months.
2. Take Omega 3 DHA at double the normal rate at 4 soft gels per day also for three months.
3. Increase your exercise levels and add weight resistant exercise.
4. Take a close look at your diet and eat as natural as possible and try to eliminate processed foods.

If you follow these steps I would be amazed if after three months that your triglycerides are not normal or near normal and your HDL is not higher.

Good luck,

I went on the Atkins diet and dropped my triglycerides from 209 to 77 in 3 months. I was also taking the CHOLEST-NATURAL which helped with my LDL which were okay but they dropped another 6 points. My HDL are usually normal to above normal. It is a life style change that helped me loose 40 pounds. Such a little price to pay for a longer enjoyable life.

What is the physiological mechanism behind how simple carbohydrates / processed foods and hydrogenated oils raise ones triglyceride levels?

Weight gain, increasing age, a diet high in saturated fats, certain medications, certain diseases, and certain heriditary conditions have been shown to raise TG levels to some extent. Is there a direct mechanism behind simple sugars / processed foods and trans fats ....? Is it perhaps to do with insulin resistance, blood sugar dysregulation, etc.? At least for the processed sugars anyway.

Cheers

I had high triglycerides problems, and I was very frustrated. I was told by Dr Les Griffith,(the founder of Bascar University which teaches doctors natural medicine) to take Red Yeast Rice,(2 in morn and 2 eve.) which is a capsule you can purchase in any drugstore, and to cut back on carbs and sugar. I started taking them and cut out sodas and sweets and I dropped my triglycerides considerably.

Hi Gail,

Glad to hear that you have had such good success in dropping off weight. As a word of warning only use the Atkins method as an initial boost. Then try and get most of your protein from vegetables.

Glad to hear that Cholest-Natural helped you. You probably don't need to be on that any more and as such you would be better to allocate those funds to Total Balance which will benefit your overall health.

No short answer here 'Synergy'.

Unfortunately I am really pushed for time at the moment so I am going to pass this question to Joanna or Nicolien to answer in detail and then repost.

Hi Dixie,

The advice you were given re diet for the trigylcerides was sound and would have been the reason for your success, not the red rice extract. I am really surprised he recommended that. Red rice extract is used for lowering cholesterol not for triglycerides. Although it is a natural substance it has the same action as a statin drug and thus carries the same inherent risks.

I would suggest that you discontinue the red rice extract as soon as you can.
