Question: from Lynn
Are eggs healthy for you and in what quantity?
I am totally confused with doctors and the health professionals saying eggs cause your cholesterol to rise and limit you intake to 2 a week, while, on the other side some health enthusiasts say eggs are the most perfect, wholesome food to eat and can be eaten anytime.
What's your feeling on this subject?
Also, I have been taking Total Balance Women's Plus and Omega 3 for about 7 months now and just realized that the pain in my fingers (maybe the sign of arthritis) had disappeared.
Answer: from Warren
There is sure a lot of misinformation about eggs out there, and much of it comes from people and organizations who should know better.
As you point out they say that they will cause your cholesterol to rise. Any rise however would be miniscule unless you eat the full output from several hens. :)
There are two important points to remember about cholesterol.
1. That only 20% of the cholesterol in your body is derived from food. The other 80% is manufactured by your liver.
2. Cholesterol is essential to life! The problem is not with cholesterol as such, but the oxidized form of LDL cholesterol.
Eating eggs in moderation will have minimal impact on your cholesterol and does not create oxidized LDL cholesterol. That is another process altogether. If you have a reasonable intake of anti-oxidants then I would not be the slightest bit worried about eating eggs...in moderation.
If however, you did not have a good anti-oxidant intake then eating eggs is not likely to impact on your overall health to any extent because you are likely to be in trouble anyway as free radicals will steadily be causing your body to steadily 'rust' away.
In your case you are taking Total Balance Women’s Plus and Omega 3 so you are using the most powerful anti-oxidant supplement available, so you can happily eat your eggs.
With regard to the pain in your fingers disappearing, this is a common effect. About 7 years ago I had developed sore finger joints. It wasn't really noticeable until I squeezed the finger joints.
About that time we developed the first generation of Total Balance and after 2 years the pain had gone totally. So, you have done well to get these results in just 7 months.
The Total Balance is much, much better in dealing with these problems than the typical glucosamine supplement, but it takes time. Although we do use this ingredient in TB it is only there as a co-factor to help with the efficacy of all the other ingredients which in turn help improves the health of the organs which in turn sets about to improve the health of the body wherever it is needed.
I suspect that if I had not started on TB seven years ago I may have an arthritis problem now. I am 60 years old and have zero aches or pains!
PS. For those readers who have a genuine high cholesterol problem then our Cholest-Natural may well be the answer. In additional to approaching the problem from multiple fronts it helps reduce the oxidation of cholesterol.

Warren,
What is the best way to cook eggs? Do they get oxidized when cooked? Is it safe to eat raw eggs? I like to eat them raw if they are very fresh, organic and free range.

Hi Vera,
If they are fresh, organic and free range then raw is probably the best way to go. Alternatively, boiled in their shell or poached in water would be OK.
Either way, if eaten in moderation then the method is relatively unimportant.

Just watch out for salmonella poisoning. Oh and allergies to the proteins in egg whites

Can you please define "moderation"? I eat 4 scrambled egg whites with 1 yolk an average of 2-3 times per week plus I sometimes also eat hard boiled egg whites on my salads- how many eggs are too many per week?
Thanks!

Hi Susan. You really have got me on this one. Moderation is very much a personal opinion. I can only tell you what I do which is probably eat a total of 8 eggs a week. I do select this through any scientific reasoning but rather because it fits in with my overall balanced and variety of diet and I think it is OK. Sometimes when I am travelling I may have more or less.
I would consider your program to be moderate.

On April 10 there was an article in the Daily Telegraph : An egg a day can shorten your life by 23% : I wonder if you could comment on that?

Hi Kevin,
I would say that the statement is absolute nonsense. In fact it is most irresponsible for a paper to print such a thing.
