Omega 3 and Arthrit-eze for Dogs?
Question: from Judith
I read with interest your article on supplements for dogs. I was told that Omega3 would benefit an animal just as it does with humans. I have a 9 year old Jack Russell Terrier who takes Phenobarbotole for seizures (which are greatly controlled).
Would Omega3 be a good supplement for him? I am also considering Athrit-Eze, since he has degenerative disc disease. I would be interested in hearing your advice.

It is ok for your dog to have Omega 3 whilst still on phenobarbital. Ensure there is a gap of at least 4 hours though between taking the supplement and the medication, as this allows both for digestion and also for peak performance of the drug.
The Omega 3 may well benefit his overall system and of course joints. Many studies have been done with dogs and fish oils, more so on puppies and with increases in neurological functioning. You can see an example by clicking here.
I would recommend 1 softgel per day for him, either as is or squeezed onto his food. See how he progresses. It is possible to increase this slightly, but because of his breed and size, begin with 1 softgel and note any sign of soft faeces, diarrhoea or flatulence. This should be adequate. But if his condition is more severe and there are no signs of adverse effect, give no more than 2 per day, on this basis. If there is any hint of adverse effect, reduce back to 1 per day.
Regarding Arthrit-Eze, specifically for his skeletal health, I have checked for safety and it again would be fine to take whilst still on the phenobarbital. Dosage is a little harder to work out due to all of the ingredients involved. However, I have checked them out individually for dogs, and worked out the best levels for a dog of this size. Based on his size, breed sensitivities and age (denoting a slower metabolism and likely more sensitive stomach) I would recommend 2 Arthrit-Eze tablets per day (1 tablet, 2 x per day) and monitor any improvements.
