Shingles...to take or not take the new Vaccine?

Question: from Terry

I read with great interest your reply to the question about Vitamin D preventing cancer. Specifically your reply: "In other words it is not a matter of taking mega doses of Vitamin D but rather ensuring that you don’t have a deficiency. Remember that most cancers are due to a nutrient deficiency!"

Can this same principle apply to other conditions?

The current issue of Prevention Magazine has 'suggestions/advertisements' to be vacinated (when you turn 60 years old) with Zostavax to prevent shingles and postherpetic neuralgia. Apparently, "1 in 4 people who have had chickenpox eventually develops the blistering rash of shingles - caused when the chickenpos virus, Varicella zoster" is reactivated.

Help for Biopolar Disorder!

Question: from Kim

My daughter suffers from bipolar disorder. Do you think this product would benefit her? Her manic phases are just as strong as her depressive phases. Thank you

Note: from Warren.  We have had many reports from customers that the protocol that Joanna refers to has indeed been helpful.

Answer: from Joanna (Medical Nutritionist for Xtend-Life)

I think you may be referring to our Neuro-Natural Serenity product? Yes, if your daughter is 12 years or above, this would be the most advisable product for her as it does help with depressive or anxiety conditions and so may help to lessen occurrence or duration.

Is N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) Safe?

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is a stable form of the essential amino acid L-cysteine. Cysteine is a precursor for glutathione, an important antioxidant in the body. Cysteine also serves as a major sulfur source for many body components. It also may help with Alzheimer’s and also eye health.

However, recently some researchers at the University of Virginia Health System have found some potential side effects which may be troubling for some people who use this nutrient in high doses. But…they are not sure, because these potential side effects have only been found in rats and may not occur in humans…and they did not occur in all rats.

Tocotrienols may Reduce DNA Damage and Reduce Risk of Cancer

This, according to a new study on Tocotrienols a less well known but important form of Vitamin E.  It is still quite an uncommon ingredient in supplements although we have been using it in Total Balance for a number of years.  If complements nicely the natural form of Vitamin E that we use and improves its efficacy.

I am surprised that it has been taking so long for other manufacturers to incorporate it in their formulas.  Maybe it is due to cost, as it is not cheap.

Anyway, this study specifically looked at the impact of Tocotrienols on DNA damage!  They found that it had a significant beneficial impact on not only reducing the DNA damage but also helped in the repair of the DNA.

Does Vitamin D prevent Cancer?

Question: from Brenda

In your Total-Balance product, does it contain enough naturally compounded vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) to prevent cancer? If not, which brand should I get the Vitamin D3 to prevent cancer? I learned recently that enough Vitamin D is the key to prevent cancers.

Answer: from Warren

Recently there has been quite a lot of publicity extolling high dose Vitamin D as a ‘cancer prevention’ protocol. There is no doubt that Vitamin D is a factor in helping prevent cancer, but it has to be put into perspective.

Respiratory Problems, Infections and Asthma...

I mentioned in a diary entry earlier this week that I would give you some pointers on how you can better avoid respiratory problems which can lead to infections and asthma.

Many people wrongly think that asthma and other breathing difficulties cannot be effectively dealt with naturally. But, this is not so! There are many, many cases in which people suffering from severe asthma and other symptoms have been able to return to ‘normal’ or near normal by following a sensible ‘natural’ protocol.

As I talked about in my dairy entry I have for some time been quite intrigued as to why many customers have reported not being as susceptible to ‘bugs’ as they used to be, and also that those people suffering from asthma noticing an improvement in their symptoms.

I also never seem to catch any ‘infections’ or have any respiratory problems even though I spend a lot of time on long haul flights which are notorious for ‘picking up’ bugs due to being exposed to several hundred other people breathing circulated air. I also am exposed to bad air pollution from time to time.

Anyway, I decided to take the time to do some further research as to why the above is the case, and I am now confident that I can explain the reasons quite briefly and simply.

Gross Misinformation about Fish Oils...

Question: from Darikka

I am a mother of one-year old boy. I have been breastfeeding him for a year now and will continue to do so for another year. When my baby was 8 month, he had skin rash that appeared everyday and disappeared in the morning. The doctor said he could be allergic to seafood so we stop giving him seawater fish since then.

I just discovered recently that he actually was allergic to baby liquid soap. I switched to a bar soap and he never had skin rash again. I, however, do not dare to give him seafood yet. At the same time, I am afraid that he might not have enough Omega 3 for his brain. I would like to use your fish oil hoping that it will be passed on to him through my milk. Nevertheless, I have some questions/concerns on the following:

Protocol to Prevent Bone Fractures!

An article just published in the Lancet suggests that calcium supplementation with or without Vitamin D supplementation reduces the risk of bone fracture in people aged over 50 by 12%.

Hmmm…if the results showed this as an average and included calcium on its own then the benefits from a ‘proper’ calcium supplement would be much higher!

For example…it is well known the absorption of calcium is nowhere near as good if it does not have Vitamin D present, so the average result would have been lowered if it factored in those supplements that did not have Vitamin D.

Then, there is the issue of magnesium which should be present in a calcium supplement…this will help further.  How about Boron?
