Oprah Winfrey and Dr Oz

Question: from Jas

I was watching the Oprah Winfrey show and it was about supplements. she had a well known Dr on the show whose name is Dr. oz. what concerned me is that he suggested that a person should only take one tablet as prescribed on a multivitamin bottle but should break the tablet into half and take one half first and take the other half later on in the day.

I don’t know if you know who Dr. Oz. is but he seems to have a lot of medical knowledge about many things and also has his own website and being on the Oprah show I assume he has to know what he is talking about. Now my concern is that I’ve been told to take 6 of the total balance tablets where as this dr. is advising people to break their one daily vitamin into half and to take it and different intervals of the day.

Supplements for Children! What do you think?

In response to a recent question from a customer I posted some details about when we expect to release our new Total Balance for children. Interestingly, a blog reader feels that a supplement for children is not warranted.

Perhaps other readers may like to comment. I have responded to that readers post with my view about the merits of children taking a supplement. I think that I have got it right based on my personal observations in my travels and observing my grandchildren and their friends.

What do you think? Are children really getting all there nutrients from their normal diet? Are most of them healthy, free from colds and other sickness?

Children's Total Balance

I was just wondering how the children’s formula was coming along? My daughter is 2 years old and right now she is on a children’s formula from pharmanex.

Answer: from Warren

We have all the raw ingredients on hand and will be doing tablet trials this week. The labels are being proof read ready for printing. If all goes well we will be releasing the Total Balance children’s product the first week of August…

This will be quite a unique formula and unlike anything else on the market today. It will truly help give children a good start to their lives and help their bodies during these critical years.

Check the labels of your breakfast spreads...

I am travelling at the moment and last night I stayed with some health conscious friends.

At breakfast time they put some organic jam on the table and fruit and muesli...  Plus some really nice dark whole grain bread.  As usual I looked at what spreads they were using for their toast and and as with many health conscious people they had a spread called Golden Olive using olive oil.  They had another which was a 'Delicious dairy spread with real dairy cream.

I asked them why they were not using butter, and the answer was because they believed that these spreads were healthier.

Also as usual I looked at the small print on the back of the containers.

Finally...some official recognition about Amalgam fillings...

For years I have written about the potential dangers of mercury from amalgam fillings.  During this period the safety of these fillings have been hotly debated by scientists on both sides of the fence.

It always interests me how scientists with similar education and qualifications can have such opposing views.  Is it that they really believe what they are saying or are they being coerced to say what they do?

In any case the US FDA has now admitted that there is potential safety issues surrounding the use of amalgam fillings.  At this stage they are keeping it low key by directing a caution to pregnant women and children, not the general population.

Vitamin D in the news...

Lately Vitamin D has been in the news because of many studies extolling its virtues in helping prevent cancers and other health problems.

I therefore thought that it would be appropriate to remind you that to receive the benefits of Vitamin D it is not simply a matter of heading down to your local health food store and buying a bottle of Vitamin D tablets/capsules! Nor, should you sit back and think “I am OK because I drink milk which has been fortified with Vitamin D” because you won't be!

Why?

Firstly, let’s consider the Vitamin D in milk (not that you should be drinking milk). Milk is fortified with a synthetic Vitamin D2 known as ‘ergocalciferol’. There is no evidence to support the benefits of this form of Vitamin D. Most if not all fortified foods use this form of synthetic D2.

Tocotrienols for your hair?

Many people do not realise how important tocotrienols are and that they should be a part of your daily supplement regime. These are part of the Vitamin E family and they should be taken in conjunction with your 'normal' Vitamin E. Remember that not all Vitamin E is the same. Much of the Vitamin E on the market is synthetic with questionable benefits.

Tocotrienols are much more potent than Vitamin E but they are still not widely used in supplements because they are much more expensive than Vitamin E. We used both the natural form of Vitamin E in Total Balance along with the recommended dose of Tocotrienols.

The reason why I mention Tocotrienols at the moment is because yesterdays posting referred to hair loss.

Benefits for hair...

Comment: from Vera

My husband has been taking Total Balance and Omega 3 for 2 years now, and one thing that is most noticeable when looking at him is the amount of hair on the top of his head. His hair has not just gone bushy but has a wonderful luster and, in general, he looks much younger than his real age. He has taken to the supplements much better than I have.  I suppose individual biological chemistry has a lot to do with it.
