Once symptoms are noticed diagnosis is usually through eye examination. 

Eye drops are usually used to dilate and enlarge the pupils, to enable the medical professional to see clearly inside and to the back of the eye. 

Visual tests, such as an Amster grid, may be used to test for specific problems and problem severity.
